Telemetry initiated SMS

For most of us, the sound of a screaming alarm is enough to quickly and safely make for the fire exit. But 11 million deaf and hearing-impaired people in the UK rely not on audible alarms - but on visual warnings. And that’s where SMS can be invaluable.

We know that SMS offers a low cost, lightning-fast method of getting information across to individuals and groups, so how do we use it to help the deaf and hearing-impaired in an emergency situation?

Technology has made a huge impact on the everyday lives of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community and SMS has proved an ideal platform for communicating with this audience.

Telemetry SMS is an automated process of communication by which data is collected at remote or inaccessible points and transmitted to receiving equipment for monitoring. The word telemetry originates from the Greek tele (remote) and metron (measure). This is useful for anyone, of course, but for the 1 in 7 people in the UK with a hearing problem, traditional alarms are simply not effective. Telemetry SMS users simply connect their phone to the monitoring device – whether fire alarms or intruder alarm systems.

One of the main benefits is that SMS does not require each party to have specialist compatible equipment. Instead, by connecting the phone number to a pre-existing alarm panel, Telemetry SMS sends out emergency text, email or voice messages to an unlimited number of subscribers. If subscribed to the system, users will receive a message on their phone alerting them about the emergency situation and be able to act on that alert immediately. The message will then issue information about the type of emergency (smoke/fire/burglar alarm), where to evacuate from - or even if it’s a false alarm.

Telemetry SMS means everyone can remain safe and alert in all situations.
