GDPR: How Cosmic SMS Handles Your Privacy

While large-scale data breaches make the headlines - such as the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica/Trump campaign scandal in 2018 - there are, in fact, breaches occurring on a regular – even daily basis and consumers have understandably become more aware about who is holding their personal information – and how they are using it.

What is GDPR?

The General Data Protection Regulation – or GDPR as we know it - came into force in May 2018 and is essentially a legal framework that sets guidelines for the collection and processing of personal information from individuals who live in the European Union (EU).

Why do we need it?

Under these guidelines, businesses are required by law to be transparent and accountable for the customer information they hold and how it is used, giving customers greater control over how their personal data is processed.

How does Cosmic SMS use my personal information?

Like many other businesses, we want our clients to have confidence and trust in us, which is why the only personal data we hold is that provided by the client. Personal data means information such as name, address, email and contact details and we obtain it directly through online registration and credit top-ups, when account information is updated or when information requests are made relating to additional products and services we may offer.

Who owns my personal information?

We ensure that all personal data held by Cosmic SMS remains the property of the account holder and is only ever used for the purpose of processing orders, for low credit notifications and payment confirmations and providing customer support.

How long do you keep my SMS message data?

We keep it only for the duration of the contract. After the contract is terminated and the client has stopped using the service, we keep SMS message data for two years before it is then deleted.

Do you ever share SMS data?

Other than the requirement to share data with mobile network operators for the sole purpose of transmitting SMS message data to the end user handset - and with the Data centre operators who host the service your personal data is stored on, the only other time we may have to disclose your personal data is for legal or regulatory reasons, such as assisting with crime and fraud prevention.

What about my payment details?

No payment card details are held on our servers. All payment data entered for online purchases is passed securely through to our upstream payment provider, who handles the transaction authorisation process securely with the payment card issuing bank.

We take your privacy very seriously at Cosmic SMS. Read more about our policy on our website and feel free to get in touch - we’re always happy to answer your questions or queries.
